Playing hardball

I got wonderful news today; I’m going to be accepted as a student at one of the colleges I’ve applied for! Woho! So now it’s back to playing hardball with my health again after first getting off the drugs for a week, and then to have my back act all painful and crazy on me. I really don’t know what happened to it – I just woke up one day and found myself with the back of a 92 year old. Thankfully it’s much better today, and I plan to hit the gym with full force again tomorrow morning.

It’s weird – I thought working out was supposed to prevent back pain, not promote it?

All in all it’s been a slow week for me. I’m tired of all kinds of Low Carb Foods, and I can only hope that the fish cakes I’ve been dreaming about today have zero carbs. If not, I’m going to try cod with remulade. I think the remulade contains some carbs – but I don’t think it’s worse than mayo. Mayo works, so the remulade better work too!

Speaking of not working- I’ve decided to not weigh in this week. It wasn’t a hard decision or anything. It’s just that with all that’s been going on health wise these past few weeks I’d rather not get more stressed out with a bad number on the scale.

The good news is, however, that my body better bring it on the scales next week!

  1. Woo hoo! Very exciting news today:)

  2. Hey Annie,

Came over to check on you. Sounds like you might be getting sick of straight-up protein. I tend to eat a good bit of mine in salads. I steam skinless, boneless chicken breasts, dice them, add mayo, a package of pre-cut salad stuff, some cucumber, tomato, maybe a bit of shredded cheese and bacon. I also make egg salad with hard-boiled eggs, mayo, tomato, shredded bacon, cucumbers, etc. I also make a whole lot of veggie dishes, often eating more veggies than protein many days….steamed veggies with butter and shredded cheese, roasted veggies tossed in olive oil, etc.
If you get an extreme craving for something sweet…buy plain cocoa powder, combine it with boiling water and pack of Splenda and half and half…..low carb hot chocolate. A tblsp. of plain cocoa has 3 carbs.

Another thing I love is farmer cheese….not sure if you have that there. You can only buy it in one particular grocery store here but I stock up on it. I mix it with cucumbers, tomato and onion powder….yummy, IMO.

You honestly do not need to eat a ton of protein….like I said, I probably eat more veggies than protein most days.

Do you feel like the low-carbing/Atkins is working for you? You know, you CAN have McDonald’s hamburgers/cheeseburgers. Just take them off the bun and ask for no ketchup to be put on. You can still have the lettuce, tomato, onion and mayo. And they still have that addictive McDonald’s/fast food taste. I’ll do that for a treat also. You can have several of them for one meal, no problem.

Back in the early 90′s, the first time I did Atkins, I experienced the exact same thing…started getting SO sick of meat, fish, eggs. But not this time….because remembering that, I really mixed it up quite a bit….and do not eat straight-up protein very often. I toss it into things…various salads, etc. I even mix crumbled hamburger meat with cottage cheese. There’s a whole lot of ways to be creative and prevent getting sick of the protein.

When did you get off the meds….and are you noticing any negative….or even any positive effects from this?

  3. Oh, do please be careful with your back! I’ve had back problems off and on from a pretty young age (I was 22 the first time my back went out).

3 years ago I was trying to lose weight before my wedding and was really pushing myself at the gym. You know – highly motivated to burn off fat, pushing myself, “working through the pain”, thinking a little soreness was a sign I was working my muscles hard enough…

Something I did was the straw that broke the camel’s back, and I ended up with incapacitating sciatica, a disk ruptured between S1 and L5. Really awful. Couldn’t walk, couldn’t work, barely made it through my wedding, had to cancel my honeymoon. Took 40mg of morphine the day of my wedding, took 80mg for the week after before I got in for surgery.

Luckily the surgery fixed me up, but I really try to warn people with a bad back to LISTEN TO YOUR BODY and not push it in exercise (especially lifting weights and doing hard-core ab work) to avoid going through what I did.

  4. Hey 299,

Just checking to see where you’ve been- that everything is going ok…
